Antennas

If you want to use the RasPiGNSS expansion boards for PPP or RTK applications, you need to make absolutely sure to get the most from satellite signals available, thus using a quality antenna capable of receiving GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, and SBAS signals is strongly encouraged.

In our tests with the RasPiGNSS modules we tested both no-brand stock GPS antennas as well as high-gain quality active GPS/GLONASS/GALILEO/BEIDOU antennas from Tallysman™. Our tests indicate that quality antennas like the Tallysman™ TW-4421/TW-4721 or TW-2410/TW-2710 outperform standard GPS antennas by far, regarding both signal strength and fix quality.

Since all of those antennas are so-called active antennas, they use a built-in LNA (Low-Noise Amplifier) for signal filtering and amplification. In contrast to passive antennas which need no power supply, this built-in LNA needs electrical power with specific voltage and electrical current delivery capabilities (See the FAQ for more details on antenna compatbility). All of the active Tallysman™ GNSS antennas offered here feature a built-in LNA which fits nicely with the power delivery capabilities of the GNSS chips on the RasPiGNSS modules in terms of output voltage and electrical current delivery.

Note: Please be absolutely sure in what frequency bands you expect the receiver to cover and make sure the GNSS antenna precisely supports those frequency bands!

The RasPiGNSS “Aldebaran” uses the upper-L-band (L1) NV08C-CSM GNSS receiver chip, therefore selecting a suitable GNSS antenna covering the L1 GPS satellite band at a minimum is important. To utilize the GLONASS satellite system as well, make sure the antenna is capable of receiving the G1 band as well, as the RasPiGNSS “Aldebaran” does. Additionally, for GALILEO satellite system reception, the E1 band has to be supported as well. The RasPiGNSS “Aldebaran” will support all those bands (L1, G1, and E1) with the newest firmware, the RasPiGNSS “Copernicus” will support them out-of-the-box.

The RasPiGNSS “Betelgeuse” will support the GPS/QZSS L1 and L2 bands (including SBAS signals), the GLONASS G1, G2, and G3 bands, the GALILEO E1 and E5b bands, as well as the BeiDou B1 and B2 bands.

For details about GNSS satellite bands and their frequency allocation scheme, see Navipedia.
